1862, aboard the USS Red Rover 
On 7 April 1862 during the American Civil War (Civil War), the Union army captured the CSS
Red Rover, previously used by the Confederates. This is a merchant ship, paddle-side, built in 1859. After his catch, he will be named USS Red Rover
and will be used as a hospital ship by the Northern forces on the Mississippi.
During the year 1862, four nuns serve as volunteer nurses on board the USS Red Rover
. They were the first female nurses to serve aboard a U.S. Navy vessel.
