Italy used during the Second World War eleven hospital ships ( Aquileia, Arno, California, Città di Trapani, Gradiska, Po, Principessa Giovanna Sicilia, Tevere, Toscana and Virgilio ). Among these is the former Dutch liner Gelria launched in 1913 for the South American line of the Royal Holland Lloyd.

Paid in November 1931 due to global economic crisis, it was sold in 1935 at the Italian Lloyd Triestino weapons which renames Gradisca . It was later used as a troop transport and, more rarely, as a hospital ship during the Ethiopian war of 1935-1936. He finds the role of hospital ship during World War II where he was employed in the aftermath of the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941.
