Italian hospital ship HMHS Gradisca

Italy used during the Second World War eleven hospital ships ( Aquileia, Arno, California, Città di Trapani, Gradiska, Po, Principessa Giovanna Sicilia, Tevere, Toscana and Virgilio ). Among these is the former Dutch liner Gelria launched in 1913 for the South American line of the Royal Holland Lloyd.

Paid in November 1931 due to global economic crisis, it was sold in 1935 at the Italian Lloyd Triestino weapons which renames Gradisca . It was later used as a troop transport and, more rarely, as a hospital ship during the Ethiopian war of 1935-1936. After the Italian surrender, he was seized by the Germans 11 September 1943 and recovered by the British destroyer HMS Kimberley in the Aegean October 28, 1944 and taken to North Africa (Algiers and Alexandria). Returned to its owners in May 1945 that it found a commercial use. It ran aground Jan. 23, 1946 on the east coast of the island Gavdos, during a trip Port Said - Malta. Refloated July 9, 1947, he was paid off and then demolished in Venice in 1950.
